The goal of this project is to formalize a structure to create LMIC-HIC mentorship Triads (supervisor – trainee – mentor) to support participating trainees across Nigeria. We will support 10-15 Nigerian oncology physician trainees from across the regions.

Project Overview

The program is a collaboration with the University of Toronto Department of Radiation Oncology, Princess Margaret Cancer Center and consists of formalizing a structure to create LMIC-HIC mentorship Triads (supervisor – trainee – mentor) to support participating trainees in Nigeria.

Project Timeline: 13-week research method seminars (distant learning enabled environment) and a yearlong mentorship for trainees supported by a robust evaluation program.

Target Regions: Across Nigeria (RT centers in Lagos, Ibadan, Enugu, Abuja, Kaduna, Sokoto, Edo, & Gombo).

Detailed Description:

This program is a collaboration with the University of Toronto Department of Radiation Oncology, Princess Margaret Cancer Center and consists of formalizing a structure to create LMIC-HIC mentorship Triads (supervisor – trainee – mentor) to support participating trainees in Nigeria. Within this distant – learning enabled environment, a research methods seminar (13 weeks) and a yearlong mentorship for the trainees on their research projects is delivered, supported by a robust evaluation program. At the individual level, this program will see 15 oncology trainees from 7 training centers across Nigeria, complete and disseminate their research findings at international conferences, and have their work published. At a programmatic level, the lessons learned through our evaluation plan will inform process and quality improvement for similar programs for the future. At a systems level, it will address social determinants of health in cancer through three strategies:

  1. Grow knowledge in research skills
  2. Enable data generation at the clinical interface
  3. Facilitate LMIC- HIC mentorship triads (supervisor – trainee – mentor) around our trainees.

It is our vision that skills and relationships that are built will lay the foundation for a culture of research, cultivate leadership, grown future generations of mentors, and contribute to the global call to action for cancer through education.
